People with pets should check their insurance covers long-term treatment to avoid large bills, an expert has commented.

Claire Moyles, pet insurance manager at Sainsbury's Bank, made her comments in response to figures showing more than a third of pet policies will not continue providing cover after 12 months.

The bank warned that conditions in animals such as epilepsy, heart conditions and eczema could be long-term problems or reoccur in pets, potentially leaving some under-covered owners with a large bill.

Ms Moyles said: "Good quality pet insurance does not need to be expensive because extensive cover at a competitive price can be found by shopping around."

Earlier this year, a study by Halifax found pets can be an important part of people's lives, with more than one million Britons having a cat or dog as a substitute for a human companion.

It revealed more than 650,000 people said they cooked more frequently for their pet than their family or partner.
