Brilliant Lewis Hamilton claims victory at Hockenheim
Lewis Hamilton snatched the outright lead in the Formula One World
Championship with a dramatic victory in the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim.
The McLaren driver took his second successive championship victory, holding
off Nelson Piquet and Brazilian Felipe Massa who finished third. Hamilton
led from the off but a seemingly comfortable victory was almost jeopardised
by his team's decision not to bring him into the pits following the
introduction of a safety car, after Timo Glock's crash almost brought the
race to a standstill.

Fergie goes to war over Berbatov allegations
SIR ALEX FERGUSON is considering legal action against the Tottenham chairman
Daniel Levy as the row over Manchester United’s pursuit of striker Dimitar
Berbatov threatens to escalate into an ugly confrontation between the clubs.
Ferguson is incandescent about a statement by Levy in which he branded the
United manager “unbelievably hypocritical” and accused him of “sheer
arrogance”.

Cristiano Ronaldo won’t get a penny more for staying at Manchester United
CRISTIANO RONALDO will not get a penny more out of Manchester United in return
for staying at the club, David Gill, United’s chief executive, has said.
Sources close to Ronaldo had suggested he could be persuaded to abandon
thoughts of a transfer to Real Madrid if United improved his £120,000-a-week
contract, but no such compromise will be proposed. Gill labelled as “lunacy”
the figure of £170,000 a week that Real Madrid are reported to be willing to
pay the player. Gill is calling on Ronaldo to show some commitment and
loyalty" by honouring the five-year deal he signed in 2007.

Steven Gibson raps League over John Bostock farce
STEVE Gibson, the Middlesbrough chairman, has branded the Football League an
“absolute disgrace” over the John Bostock affair. A league tribunal last
week ruled that Tottenham Hotspur must pay Crystal Palace a paltry £700,000
for the highly-rated 16-year-old midfield player, who had been nurtured at
Selhurst Park since childhood.

Open in need of home rule
The British adversary golfers from abroad can never take lightly was in
aggressive form again at Royal Birkdale yesterday but nobody could be
confident that the weather’s rumbustious challenge would be matched in
intensity by a generation of home players who have yielded meekly for nearly
a decade to foreign domination of The Open.

Crystal Palace farce proves small clubs pay too high a price
MY MOTHER told me to never trust a man with a messianic complex and a bright
orange face. She passed away long before Simon Jordan made his millions but
her advice still seemed sound, until this week. Now, however, we might have
to rethink. The bumptious Crystal Palace chairman, who resembles a Belisha
beacon in wrap-around shades, has been speaking a lot of sense. He is
thinking of giving up the game altogether, not because he has decided that
actually he loathes Crystal Palace, which to my mind would be eminently
understandable, but because he is “disillusioned” with the business side of
football. Well, you and me both, mate - but Jordan’s latest complaint is
more specific and few could disagree with him (apart from the people who
administer the game, of course).
